Joh. Jacobs & Co. earmarks €100m for Bremen urban development

Hamburg-based coffee group and real estate investor Joh. Jacobs & Co. is investing €100m in an urban development project in the centre of Bremen, Germany.

With completion scheduled for 2024/2025, the Balgequartier is being built around the historic HQ of Jacobs Kaffee, developing 19,000 m2 of rental space for cultural facilities, exhibitions and events, as well as retail, gastronomy, office and educational concepts.

The quarter will comprise of four buildings as well as public space to be redesigned around the ensemble of historical buildings.

They include the Historic Stadtwaage (facade from 1587), the Neues Essighaus (parts of the facade from 1618) and the Kontorhaus am Markt (1911), to which will be added the new Stadtmusikantenhaus and literature forum.

The first leases for the Kontorhaus am Markt and the Neues Essighaus have been signed with Dutch lifestyle and interior brand Dille & Kamille (for a 360 m2 store) and apartment provider limehome (80 serviced apartments on around 3,400 m2).

Additionally, the Kurdish-Turkish restaurant concept bona'me has leased over 460 m2 on the first floor of the Kontorhaus.

Further rental space is available for gastronomy, retail and office use.

Future plans include the reconnection of the core inner city and the market square more with the Weser, which flows right through the center of the Hanseatic city.

Joh. Jacobs & Co. invests in in city center real estate in Bremen and Hamburg, developing neighborhoods for future generations while achieving a sustainable increase in value.
