Amsterdam city council has contracted Dutch developer COD (Cradle of Development) to develop a 280-room hotel in the Zuidas business district for German three-star hotel chain Motel One.
Motel One and COD have signed a 25-year lease for the development.
The hotel, comprising some 10,000 m2 and a two-storey underground car park, will be located opposite the RAI congress and exhibition centre in the south of Amsterdam. Construction will start in the first half of 2013 and the hotel is expected to open its doors in 2015.
The city authorities opted for COD/Motel One following a public tender issued in November 2011. The duo was selected from a shortlist of four contenders, whittled down from an original list of 13 applicants.
COD won out in particular because of its integrated approach and high sustainability ambitions for the development, which it claims are comparable to those of BREEAM and which tie in with its goal of (re)developing future-proof buildings in urban environments.
The Amsterdam scheme fits in with Motel One’s strategy of opening hotels in all major European cities. The German chain has opened 40 hotels in Germany and Austria over the past 11 years and aims to open another five this year.
